Fill your days with visits to numerous churches in Braga, Portugal

Often called the “Portuguese Rome”, the city of Braga is the oldest city in Portugal and is known for its ancient culture, history and traditions. It is filled with old narrow streets where you can enjoy getting lost and discovering  its hidden gems including centuries-old buildings, churches and landmarks.

Located in Minho Province, Braga was named the European Youth Capital in 2012 because 35% of its population is composed of young people who are less than 25 years old. It is the home of the Universidade do Minho, the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, and Escola Secundária Sá de Miranda, the reasons why it has a relatively young population. It is very easy to get to Braga even if it is located in the northwest corner of the country. You can take a bus or car from the numerous cities in Portugal or Spain. The quickest way to get into the city is by air travel. The  Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport is about 53 kilometers from the heart of Braga. It is serviced by 20 domestic and European carriers.

The city is known for having more than 30 churches, parishes and convents, the most famous of which are the  Santuario do Bom Jesus do Monte, Se Cathedral,  Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro, Igreja da Misericordia de Braga, Igreja de Sao Victor, and the Igreja dos Terceiros. You can fill your days with church visits and still not be able to visit each and every one! Aside from churches, you must check out the Mosteiro de Sao Martinho de Tibaes, Garden of Santa Barbara, Museu dos Biscainhos, Museu D. Diogo de Sousa - Museum of Archeology,  and Museu PIO XII. You can also enjoy outdoor activities such as Segway and walking tours, kayaking, canoeing, and a 19th century funicular ride.
